Children of Abraham
Building Community
In March of 2002, the Nashua Area and Souhegan Valley Interfaith Councils jointly presented a thought provoking series, "Children of Abraham ~ Building Bridges to Understanding", which looked at the common heritage of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism. The series focused on recognizing commonalties, building understanding, and encouraging "trialogue".
In response to the high interest in last year's series, the Councils presented "Children of Abraham ~ Building Community" in March of 2003. The series focused on understanding the roots of the current Middle Eastern crisis and finding ways to affect public policy, to broaden perceptions of the three faiths, and to strengthen relationships as "Children of Abraham."
The Councils again received a grant from New Hampshire Humanities Council to partially fund the series of programs. The first presentation, titled "Throne and Altar: The Tension Between Nationalism and Religion in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam" featured a talk by Dr. Martin Menke, Associate Professor of History at Rivier College. In the second program, Dr. Menke's topic was "Modern Origins of the Middle Eastern Crisis," with an interfaith panel responding to his presentation. The third program, "Going Forward Together," provided time for small group discussions, which focus on identifying ways of working together effectively.
Presentations were held at the First Baptist Church in Nashua.
