Children of Abraham
The Psychology of Peacemaking
In March of 2004, the Nashua area and Souhegan Valley Interfaith Councils jointly presented a continuation of the thought-provoking public series, Children of Abraham. The theme was considering pathways to peace. This program was presented in three parts.
In the first presentation, Philip J. Walker discussed "The Psychology of Peacemaking". Mr. Walker's work with Israelis, Palestinians and most recently in Iraq, has focused on nation-building -- building institutions in conflict and post-conflict situations. This session focused on building trust between parties and the psychology of looking beyond one's own standpoint to understanding the other's point of view.
The series continued with "Faith, Law and Love in the Abrahamic Religions." Mr. Walker discussed how the differing views of Islam, Judaism and Christianity affect the peace process.
The final presentation was a workshop on "Forging Paths to Peace." This workshop explored ways individuals from all faith traditions and backgrounds can come together and effectively move toward world peace.
The series will ended with prayers and candle-lighting for peace and a communal meal.
Presentations were held at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Amherst and the First Baptist Church, Nashua.
